This page is devoted to helping brothers and sisters narrow down their search for books that are faithful to biblical exposition, evangelical, and contain good Christian scholarship that is committed to a God-centered and Christ-exalting aim. (Note: We are only making people aware of books that we [or our wives] have actually read. This way, we know the contents of what we are recommending to people. As the days move along, the list will grow.)

How’s Frank Thielman’s NT Theology? I’ve been thinking about getting it along with the companion vol of Waltke’s OT Theology. Please respond!
October 28, 2007 at 10:52 pm |
I appreciate Frank Thielman’s NT Theology, because he works with each book in the NT, but in each case maintains how they fit into their larger units (e.g. Gospels-Acts, Paul, General Epistles-Revelation), as well as within the testimony of the canon. He affirms that the very nature of the discipline of NT Theology demands that it be also canonically based, rather than a mere historical discipline. He is Presbyterian, and therefore this influences him some in the larger concepts of covenant theology. What I find most helpful is his persistent awareness of the unity even within the diversity of the NT writers’ testimony. What (or shall I say who) unifies their teaching? Indeed, Jesus Christ. I. H. Marshall has recently written a NT Theology, published by IVP. It has a very similar layout, but he is a Methodist, and therefore his soteriological conclusions will be vastly different than Thielmans. A forthecoming NT Theology, written by a Southern Baptist, that also might be of interest to you is Thomas Schreiner’s. Be watching for it.

Thanks. Yeah, I saw that Schriener had one coming out in ‘08. I’m surprised you didn’t tell me it was already available, leading me down another dead end road. But anyway, I’ve been wanting Waltke’s OT Theology, but noticed that Zondervan had put out Thielman’s NT Theology (A canonical approach, hmmm), but hadn’t heard anything about it. I need a good OT and NT theology.

Thanks for your comment. I saw that you have Dunbrell’s Faith of Israel. Have you read his Covenant and Creation? That has been a very formative book in my theology.

Matthew,
Thanks for stopping by. I did glean much from Dumbrell’s overarching theological conclusions. I have not read Covenant and Creation. I will keep my eye out for it.
